Ridley Scott’s original 1979 Alien film may have started off as a standalone sci-fi/horror film, but the movie following Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley as she survives the brutal attacks of a Xenomorph has since become a classic – and launched an entire franchise. Alien inspired three sequels, with a fifth film in development from director Neill Blomkamp, but Scott himself revived the franchise in 2012 with the prequel, Prometheus. Now, Scott is continuing his prequel series with the upcoming Prometheus sequel, Alien: Covenant.
Back before the DC Extended Universe was officially created, Warner Bros. launched a new franchise around Superman with Henry Cavill donning the iconic red cape. After Man of Steel, the studio expanded the world around Superman with an ambitious slate that continues to evolve. One such move involves Dwayne Johnson joining the DCEU as the magic-powered Black Adam in the upcoming Shazam! movie.

However, one medium that arguably saw the greatest gains since last January has been streaming video – the likes of which Netflix continues to dominate. With hits like Luke Cage, The Crown and the pop culture phenomenon of Stranger Things, hopes are high that Netflix will continue to maintain its level of quality programming into 2017.

The marketing push has picked up for this next season of Sherlock of late too, what with the first episode of the modern-day Sherlock Holmes TV series’ fourth season – titled ‘The Six Thatchers’ – being officially scheduled to air at the literal beginning of the new year, in 2017.
